SHARE COLORADO FOOD PROGRAM

Labor’s Community Agency is the only Local Union host site for the SHARE Colorado Food Program and has been for 17 years.  For those of you who don’t know about SHARE or have not participated before, we would like to tell you a little bit about what the program is and encourage you, your family, friends, and your union brothers and sisters to participate.  Be sure to look below for the upcoming November menus and the December special.  To order your November SHARE to be picked up at Labor’s Community Agency on November 18 between 10:00 and 11:00, you will need to order at our location at 7510 W. Mississippi Ave., Ste. 230 no later than November 2 or on-line at www.sharecolorado.com no later than November 13.  For more information, please contact Maria Palacios at Labor’s Community Agency at 303-744-6169 ext. 12 or e-mail mariapalacios@laborscommunityagency.org.

What is SHARE?

The Self Help And Resource Exchange (SHARE) program is through the Catholic Charities and Community Services, here in Denver. Anyone can participate in this program regardless of their income level. The goal of SHARE is to help families save about 50% on their groceries, while encouraging the building of relationships with their neighbors in the community.

How does SHARE achieve this?

SHARE selects about twenty items that you're most likely to buy at the grocery store, including fresh fruits, vegetables, and frozen meats. Then through a national affiliate network, they purchase massive quantities of these items at very low prices. At no time do they ever accept donated food for distribution. Then through a network of volunteers at their warehouse and distribution centers known as "host sites", the food is picked up by the host site for you to pick up.

As a nonprofit organization, SHARE relies heavily on volunteers and passes on the huge savings by their reduced expense. Unlike a traditional grocery store, they don't maintain inventories, expensive stores, large employee bases, etc. They rely primarily on word of mouth advertising. Plus they're in it for you, not for the organization's profits.

Actually they encourage 2 hours of volunteerism for every participant. They consider volunteering anything from working at the host site or warehouse, to baby-sitting, to sharing a meal with a neighbor or friend. Virtually anything that you do for anyone not in your immediate family for free is volunteering. Most people find that they're already doing it without realizing it.

How do I participate?

We would like to encourage you to come to Labor’s Community Agency’s host site at 7510 W. Mississippi Ave., but know that many of you live far from our location, so to find a location near you, please look on the SHARE web site at www.sharecolorado.com under Host Site Locations or contact SHARE at 303-428-0400 or 800-933-7427. You may then go to that host site during the listed registration/sign up times to place and pay for your order or order on-line at www.sharecolorado.com and you will be able to pick up your order at the host site nearest you during their designated distribution/pick up day and time. The host site locations accept cash, Quest cards, and most take checks. If placing an order over the phone with SHARE, you can use a credit card (Visa, M/C), Quest card, or check by phone or on-line with your Visa or MasterCard.
