Special thanks to Victor Jimenez, Dollar Thrifty Customer Service Rep Lead, for being the spokesperson for DTAG.
Last night, as a culmination of our collective efforts, we made history and changed the lives of 10,000 families! The City Council gave unanimous final approval to the $15 min wage for airport and other Denver-contracted workers. Wow!
When one of our organizers visited Clarette, one of our United Airlines catering members, at her home this morning, she collapsed in tears. The amount of money that Clarette and thousands of other workers are going to get starting in July is life-changing. Thank you all for standing with them and making DIA jobs better.
Next steps – celebrations and thank yous!
- Celebration tomorrow at DIA - Tomorrow after Mayor Hancock signs the bill, SEIU 105 will host an open house celebration at the union hotel at the airport. Westin DIA, Willow Room, level 2. Stop by any time between 11a-5p for food & fun! Also be on the lookout for a victory video dropping from the $15forDIA FB page tomorrow.
- Thank you’s to elected leaders - Send thank you’s to Mayor Hancock, Councilwoman Kniech, and the other 12 members of City Council who all supported this. CWA drafted up materials to use for this, please see attached and get some appreciative calls into the Council members. We will do a separate thank you to Mayor Hancock next week so let’s focus on Council the rest of this week.
- Another celebration Fri 3/29 - $15forDIA/UNITE HERE is hosting a celebration (this victory is so big it needs at least 2 parties!). 3:30p-5:30pm near the airport, Staybridge Suites, DIA Room, 6951 Tower Rd. Please RSVP to me so that we have enough refreshments for everyone!
I will also be scheduling a final $15forDIA coalition meeting to debrief the campaign, capture lessons learned and explore ways to leverage this victory into the larger #FightFor15andAUnion at DIA and beyond. Stay tuned for that!
But for now, let’s truly and deeply celebrate how far we’ve come!
In solidarity and joy,
Denver Chapter President
